August, 2008The hidden Web & the dark side of Google Recently I was checking google Analytics and other tools to see where my site visitors come from and other data.
While at it, I also tried to figure what pages of my sites are indexed by google. If you have a page and it is not indexed by google then it will not appear in Google's search results. I came up with an important number of pages from my sites that are not indexed. I have tried to get them indexed in many different ways: Submitting them directly to google in their "About Google" page, or linking them, etc. But they still don't appear in Google results. Here are some examples: loire valley trip , Maastricht travel review , Antwerp travel pics , Navara travel pics , Paros visit , Bayonne France Fez The embarrasing list of non indexed pages goes on and on. I've tried different tricks and tips but non has worked. Even creating a sitemap and submitting it to Google hasnt fixed the issue of having pages not indexed. This is a big problem if you look at the web as a whole. When I search Google for a song, I get tons of garbage results. For example, there is a russian site that sells digital music, not properly licensed offcourse, and they appear with different 100's of different URL address in the search results. Yet you have pages like the ones I listed above that contain perfectly relevant content and information and they dont get indexed. Google has the majority of the share of Search engine usage. This makes the picture look really sad. Think of it, if the company that is loaded with money and has most of the market share, produces such lame and unacceptable search results, it only means that HALF, or I bet more than the best web content is INVISIBLE to the world. I already suspected that. As for example I collect very rare items: Eyeranian 45rpms -change the Eye for "i"- from the 1970s. The results I get searching for that material is near zilch. Only the stuff I myself has published appears more or less. Year after year I ask myself: Can it really be that nobody else is working on this material seriously.!! Now I think there must be stuff, it's just that BIG BROTHER Google is NOT indexing it!!. You might say that your blog is fully indexed and appears. Yes Yes Yes! My blog appears fully indexed too, but Blogs are usually on systems like BLOGGER or WORDPRESS that are largely used and probably GOOGLE has instructed their crawler to properly index pages on these systems. The problem is when you have sites on your own domains or other non-big name servers. Sad Sad Sad!! Google should really do a better and more realistic job with the search engine. Why dont they ask people who have websites if they are having problems? Why dont they make clear guidelines on how to get surely indexed? OTHER SEARCH ENGINES : SNAP has visual capabilities, the results are a bit more interesting than google. Cuil the results aint that cuil, but at least its a bit visual Alexa It self presents itself as some sort of ranking authority but its not accurate at all missing what other counters and engines do see. The search is at least visual and that part works nice. Kartoo Very visual, creates a visio style chart and map
To get visual results for google there is "GooglePreview" extension for Firefox.
