I was walking down the street here in Madrid when my eyes came accross a mini poster of dark synthpop legend Anne Clark on the wall. Its a poster announcing her future concert in Madrid. It will be 22 of October. Anne Clark was that woman in the 1980s that used to read scarry poetry with a scary heavy cockney accent over heavy energetic synthpop background created by David Harrow which if I am correct later was the co-writer of Billie Ray Martin's only hit "In Loving Arms". Anne looked scarry. Kind of like a " man-hater frosty nordic, bleach blond lesbian activist" with short needle sharp pointy hair signed up to PETA look (no offence, just discribing the look). She still sounds scary which is good. One of her new tracks is awsome called Prayer Before Birth. You can buy items legaly on Anne Clark's official site.
Anyway... Anne Clark refreshed 1980s dark synthpop memories in me. One thing led to another and I remembered the gorgeous synthpop song If I ever by San Diego synthpop duo Red Flag.
"If I ever" is one of Dario's favorite songs of all times. To give a little background. I had not been a huge Depeche Mode fan. I think it was in 1987 that Depeche had their Music For the Mases album. The album was promising to me. Songs like "Behind the Wheele" hinted that they could maybe progress in the future towards music that was both dark yet also fresh and pop. But they were not quite there yet. Those were the days before "Enjoy the Silence". Then one day it was 1998 and I was listening to Madrid's now defunct alternative dance station Radio Vinilo. A synthpop song started to play without being announced. It had this cool sound wich reminded me of a hellicopter. The song was sooo cool. I was conviced it was Depeche Mode. I told myself: "Wow depeche finally came up with the song they really needed to convince me and the mainstream listeners". Well it wasn't Depeche, it was Red Flag and the Naif Art album version of If I Ever. I made a 1 minute Incomplete Demo Clip for youTube with links to the Red Flag official site www.redflag.org. I put snow mountain flight images on top because the song reminds me a flight over the Pyrineas where I could see snow covered mountains from the airplain.
So I wondered what happened to Red Flag. I actually saw them live in 2001 in San Jose, California. It could have also been early 2002. It was a small venue and mainly the viewers where Asian. The singer had a cute pair of wings on his back. It was cool. I remember the band had become quite active at that time and where self releasing material from their site.
So then I became very sad when I read that one of the brothers, the queer looking blond singer, commited suicide in April 2003. Gluuup!!. Shivers went down my spine when I read the story. The date was scarry to me. I can say that 2003 was the worst year in my life personally when I hit rock bottom though in my case the lowest point was November of 2003. So sorry, at least he stopped suffering. His straight brother has restarted Red Flag and has a new album and does concerts. The albums can be easily and legally bought from the bands web site.
