November, 2008Obama Pumpin Dolls Kylie La Reina Prop 8 , etc
It is funny how searching for a little piece of news on the internet, one can end up discovering a whole range of topics that have little to do with each other. I was looking for information on songwriter Toni Ten . He is a great songwriter that managed to make many great dance music releases in the late 80s and early 90s when there was a hostile attitude on radio in Spain towards dance music. One of his great co-written songs is " más que un engaño " by Rebeca which was such a big latino hit that I first heard it in California.
That search led me to a blog by an ex-member of a spanish Remixing team called Pumpin Doll's. They split some years ago. Before I talk about that blog, I have to tell you a really funny story about a Marketing department as described in the website of Juan Belmonte which was the other member of Pumpin dolls and the real musician in the duo. If you are not a musician, first let me explain what a remix is. Music these days, is recorded in multi tracks. In other words songs are recorded instrument by instrument, not live. So for example, a recording may have 64 parallel tracks, each track having an instrument recorded in it. One track has guitars. Therefore you can listen to the guitar alone by itself, the vocals are by themselves too, you can listen to the vocals acapella... A remixer can remove a track ( instrument) and substitute it by a new sound and recording. Therefore really a remixer is an arranger as he can re-write the arrangement and include a new instrument with a new arrangement. So, remixing is a lot of creative work and its not this ridiculous concept people have that a remixer is some DJ behind some turntables.
This brings us to the extremely funny story of Pumpin' Dolls remix of Kylie Minogue's song from 2000 Please Stay . The story is described in Spanish in Juan Belmonte's website. So I will translate it for you. Quote: PLEASE STAY KYLIE MINOGUE A paranormal phenomenon: we managed to do a remix for Kylie Minogue, we delivered the remixes to EMI España, to the person incharge of the international department. The only thing the person had to do was to stick them in an envelope and mail them to the UK, where Parlaphone UK was anxiously awaiting them since we had the approval of Kylie's Australian fan club. Time goes by and we didn't hear anything back from anyone. As it turned out, the person at EMI España ends up confesing that he/she never bothered to mail the remixes to the UK because
Can anyone believe this!!!!????... ¿Alguien da más? Eventually because of the stupidity of the person at EMI Spain the mixes arrived so late that Parlaphone UK rejected them and refused to pay for them, but they sent a copy to a webmaster in Australia which illegaly placed them on the internet. But whose gonna bother to take him to court so far away...
Juan Belmonte offcourse was the real musician in Pumpin Dolls. But the blog I came accross yesterday was of the untalented other member of the ex-team, called Abel Arana. It appears that mr muscle merry has figured out finally what he is good at: Reading sensational magazines like HOLA which are the spanish equivalent of the National Enquirer . Surprisingly though it turns out that he is a very clever and sharp writer. I laughed a lot reading his notes. My question is, why having such talent for writing, he is waisting himself writing about the typical worthless garbage of american pop celebrities and trash supposed celebrities in Spain? Some clicks in his site, took me to the blog of spanish legandary artist Alaska and her husband Mario . Anyway, she has been involved in many songs that are part of my all time favorites , including the brillant " Entre mil dudas " from 2004.
However it's been some years since I pulled the plug and stopped listening to her, because the last album was truely awful and also badly produced. Now the blog had a mix of her posts and her husbands posts and I'm not sure who worte what. But there was a very annoying post relating to the infamous comments the queen of spain had made.
Moving on... My blog started quietly long time ago as simply a vehicle for me to save my memories. So even though I don't feel that great and feel a bit tired, I wanted to make sure I made an entry regarding the election of OBAMA as the president of the United States of America. After all I am also a U.S. Citizen. Congartulations to all americans and everyone else. Even if Obama doesn't achieve anything during his mandate, the simple fact that a non white has been elected is worth the 4 years of his mandate. The equation has changed for the better.
On the other hand OBAMA had such a wide lead over his ridiculously old red-neck republican oponent with 7 homes (no mortgage), that it never would have occured to me that OBAMA's election could be in jeoperdy. Thats why last night my attention was more on the annoying little proposition in California.
What a horrible marry-go-round for 18,000 people!!!!!!!!! God-damn fucking MORMONS fertilizer sellers from LAWNDaLE and other fuck-your-causin litte towns!!!
Guess the rest... gotta go to sleep. Here is an interview with the Spanish arranger Juan Belmonte trackback dariointernet.com made in 2009 where he reveals that there was a Pumpin Dolls solo album that was not released. There is a remix for Camilo Sesto that wasn't released. A separate interview reveales that they rejected an offer to do a remix for Madonna .. The below video is very cute. It is of this hunky mean looking butch man from Bulgaria, playing heavy metal guitar brillantly over the soft arrangements of "El Amor Coloca" by Monica Naranjo. It is great because the original production was too soft. Well done. I had always loved the chorus of that song, though the verses are not as great.
As one of the comments under his video said: "!!!Que escandalo Mari !!!!!"
