What is this bizzarly titled "Italo Disco" music?
Well, at the begging of the 1980s synthasizers such as Yamaha's DX7
and also sequencers and drum machines and midi finally appeared on
the market. Just as the US was shutting its doors to dance/disco
music (Baldwin Park incident), in Europe (mainly Italy) some musicians
started making dance/disco music but this time without big expensive
orchestra's, as in the 1970's, but instead using the new synthesizers
and electonic sounds. This new dance music coming first out of Italy
had other special characteristics, like its electronic bass line track
of 1/8 1/8 strokes and its somewhat restrained speed. One interesting
fact was that this music remained mainly a continental European music.
The brits and the americans didn't get to know this music. Later in
the 80s british producers Stock Aitken & Waterman poorly immitated
this music with productions for artists like Koylie Minogue.Dario Margeli.
One of "Italo Disco's" big names is Spagna. Ivana Spagna & brother have been writing songs including "Happy Song" done by Baby's Gang....also the Brando song.... and some Fun Fun stuff. I think Easy Lady was first released on an indie and that got her signed to CBS/Sony. Needless to say that Easy Lady became a #1 in many countries including Spain. I thought that was much better produced ,written or performed than her most famous release Call Me. The scan bellow is of the first single of her 2nd lp. Every Boy And Girl charted in the U.K. by the way! She's now singing italian pop ballad which is more profitable. I like "colpa del Sole" "Lupi solitari" etc.. I just wish she did 1/2 and 1/2

The single was called Mirage ...however the chorus says: Sta Sera La Luna Ci trovera Fortuna (i.e this evening the moon will find us luck). One good thing about this band is that at least there is a full length cd available for them. The other songs I like from them is "take me up". I don't like tracks like Disco band...Delirio etc.. because they have too many embarrasing moments in them
Scotch Italo 12" release - No year mentioned
Frank Farian's Boney M project took "Kalimba di Luna" to great hights ...both in terms of production and chart success (it was a well done cover). There are Greatest Hits Cd's for Esposito out there...unfortunately most tracks on it are instrumentals. He kind of sings in Italian. I say kind of...because some stuff doesn't sound italian to me (?). The bellow 12" is not included in the cd releases of him that I've seen. It's Great...co-produced by Mauro Malavasi.
Tony Esposito's indie 12" release
Gazebo...he was such a promising artist when he started ...unfortunately too many mistakes were made right when his career could have exploded. I mean from the lp bellow they released "Trotsky Burger" as the first single (a totally lauzy...embarassing..tacky lyrics). It's a pitty cuz the lp has a buetuful song in it called "Sun Goes Down On the Milky Way"
Univision Lp from Gazebo on Baby Records
Bellow is "Giorgia" with "Tell me why". First off this is not the Giorgia that is having italian language pop ballad success in recent times. "Tell me why" was released in 86 /87 by CGD -the same label as Umberto Tozzi-. Which makes me beleive that the artist is Giorgia Fiorio....all though the name Fiorio never appears anywhere. I know a song by Giorgia Fiorio also released on CGD sung in Italian called "Avro'" (i.e I'll have) whith wich she participated in San REmo. Anyway she has a rugged buff voice and good songwriting team. Tell me Why got lots of airplay in Spain.
If we have to trace back the origins of italo disco.... we will certainly can trace it back to Disco music produced by Italian producers such as Mauro Malavasi or Mauro Massara or La bionda in the late 70's. "Margherita" is one unforgettable hit!
P.Lion from Italy had a full length album too!![]()

. Germany ....well ... this music would not have reached many people if it wasn't for the worlds 3rd biggest market! While the Brits were self indulging themselves in Only their own stuff and consuming anything american .... Germanies charts were open minded to all Europe...and not just their Own stuff . Now they had Italo Disco of their own . My favorite was Fancy (He isn't anymore ... since he's 90's releases have been so corny! and fluffy). Bolero was such a classic. It's synthesizer heaven. What an arrangement. It went to #1 in Spain without radio airplay from the main radio station (who is responsible for depriving spaniards from Dance music). Bellow is my other Fancy favorite created by Anthony Monn. This was released in spain by blanco y negro in 87. It has the same fun feeling as Mozzarts "Money". I never noticed it was released in 87....I found it in a store here in California!!! recently. So enjoy the Scan!... and the pleasure is mine! |
