August, 2008God Damn McDonnell Douglas Planes Those who know me will tell you how much I travel around to see new places. Just look at my travel site. I've made it my lifestyle to travel to beautiful places at any available chance for the past 3 years in order to save myself from falling into depression. Living in Madrid, and flying so much, I've been to T4 of the Barajas airport, the location of the latest air dissaster accident, at least 4 times a month sometimes twice that in the past three years. Of all these trips during the past 3 years, the scariest one by far was, you guessed it, a Spanair flight from Bilbao to Madrid in February this year 2008. I remember the take-off being extremely angled and feeling stressed as I knew it was a McDonnell Douglas!!!! I forget flights easily since I travel so much. But that one is still on my mind as one of the worst. To the point that I am travelling next week and I was planning to take a plane from Jerez to Madrid. Flights from Jerez are usually either Spanair or Iberia. When I was planning the trip I was really telling myself, no, try not to take Spanair, you'll end-up dead in one of those goddamn McDonnell planes. I know McDonnell planes too well. Remember, those DC-10s, their engines would fall off mid flight in the 70s/ 80s and 90s. The ones that also had their cargo doors break open mid flight. 1,261 people have been killed from DC-10s alone!!!! I lived in Long Beach California in the 90s, where jokingly 90% of the people worked for McDonnell's plants their. I remember having to drive under their employee's bridge on my way to the cruising bars of North Long Beach. I even knew irresponsible Mother Fuckers that worked for McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach. Only caring for their stocks, getting their Masters paid for and hoarding money, always ready to be job-hopping at the first chance. So needless to say that I'm not fully surprised by this latest McDonnell Douglas MD-80 accident. Unfortunatelly this will mean that Spanair probably will get screwed up and we'll be left here in Spain with one less low cost airline. I don't think its spanairs fault. I'm sure its them SHITTY MD American planes. So another one for MD's record: Spanair Flight JK 5022 Madrid - Las Palmas Canarias. Thankfully Vueling, EasyJet and many other younger airlines are using European Airbus A320-200 , Airbus A319-100 118 . Update Indeed, as I had guessed the primary investigation focuses on electronical or electrical problems typical of the MD planes as the cause of the crash. As the Wall Street Journal reported it looks like the plane tried to take off without the necessary flaps ( aletas ) being extended for take off. This wouldn't have been an issue if the alarm system of the plane worked properly because an alarm should have sounded, however, the electronical system malfunctioned and no alarm sounded. As it turns out there was a major crash with 15+ dead involving another McDonnell MD-82 that seams to have happened in the exact same circumstances. It was Northwest airlines flight 255 crash in the US in 1987. Investigation showed Lack of electrical power to the aircraft takeoff warning system which prevented the pilot from becoming aware that the flaps where not extended.
