November 2008Goodbye to the bus to the industrial outskirts
The oficial figures are that 20% of Spaniards are poor, as of a report published in November 2008 which I can't find now because newspapers these days are not very interested in these topics and quickly move them to their archive section in favor of the news of the latest extravagant spending binge of this or that rich bitch thief politician or celebrity. Those are the official figures which as you can guess look way nicer than the real picture. Anyone like me having to commute in horrible busses to the outskirts for work, knows that way more than 20% are poor. I've just started my fourth year working at the same company. During the past three the company was located waaaay out in the outskirts of Madrid. When I first moved to Spain from California, I had told myself that I would only accept a job within the city limits. After years of commute thru grey highways in California, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to go thru the same here. Since the pay is shit here, at least it should have something attractive about it, like working in the center of town. But apparently it is a similar story here and companies end up in industrial outskirts because parking for their top managers with BMW's is cheaper there. Anyway , out of necesity, I finally gave up and accepted this job which was out in the boonnies. The commutr is 1 Hour and 15 mins each way in a horrible green bus called " autobuses Continental " . That's 2 and half hours of ones life lost each day.
Not only the time lost but the joy for life lost as you are reminded by sitting together with the poorest of the poor the true grey colors of this life. Annoying people talking on their mobile all the time, etc , etc...
Well thankfully I'm finally liberated from taking that bus. The picture shows the very last time I took that bus, becuase the company is moving within the town center. So another chapter finished in this life. Let's see whats in store now...
